Life insurance rate class
Updated for plan year 2026
In plain terms
A rate class is the health-and-risk tier a life insurer assigns during underwriting, and it sets your premium. Common non-tobacco classes from best to worst are Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with separate, much costlier tobacco classes. Two people buying identical coverage can pay very different prices based purely on class.
A plain example
A healthy applicant who qualifies for Preferred Plus might pay nearly half what a Standard-class applicant pays for the same $500,000 policy: the difference is the class underwriting assigned after the medical exam.
Why it matters
Rate class, not just the death benefit, decides your price, and you can influence it by applying with good health numbers, being nicotine-free, and shopping multiple insurers who weigh factors differently.
A common point of confusion
Nicotine is the biggest lever; most insurers want you nicotine-free for 12+ months before quoting a non-tobacco rate, and that includes vaping in most cases.
