Other structures coverage
Updated for plan year 2026
In plain terms
Other structures coverage (Coverage B) pays for structures on your property not attached to the house: a detached garage, fence, shed, deck, or gazebo. It is typically set automatically at about 10% of your dwelling limit, which suits most homes but may need raising for a large detached garage or workshop.
A plain example
A storm destroys your detached garage. With a $400,000 dwelling limit, your ~$40,000 of other-structures coverage pays to rebuild it, separate from the coverage on the house itself.
Why it matters
If you have significant detached structures, the default 10% may fall short, and you won't know until a claim. Checking it once ensures a valuable outbuilding isn't underinsured by default.
