Personal property coverage

Updated for plan year 2026

In plain terms

Personal property coverage (Coverage C) pays to repair or replace your belongings (furniture, electronics, clothing, kitchenware) after a covered event like fire, theft, or certain water damage, whether the loss happens at home, in your car, or while traveling. Your limit should equal the total value of everything you own.

A plain example

A fire destroys most of your apartment's contents. If you own about $30,000 of belongings and carry a $30,000 limit with replacement-cost coverage, the policy pays to buy new equivalents up to that amount.

Why it matters

Most renters guess this limit from a dropdown and set it far below what they actually own, discovering the shortfall only at claim time. Adding up your belongings once is the difference between being made whole and being paid a fraction.
