Off-premises coverage

Updated for plan year 2026

In plain terms

Off-premises coverage means your renters policy protects your personal property when it's away from your apartment: stolen from your car, lost in a hotel, or taken at work. It's usually capped at a percentage of your total personal-property limit, and it applies subject to your deductible and any category sub-limits.

A plain example

A laptop is stolen from your car while you're at the gym. Because renters insurance follows your belongings, you file the loss under your renters policy's off-premises coverage, not your auto policy, minus your deductible and within your electronics sub-limit.

Why it matters

Many renters don't realize their coverage travels with them. Off-premises coverage is why renters insurance protects you against theft on trips, at work, and from your car, far beyond the four walls of your rental.

A common point of confusion

It doesn't cover the car itself or built-in parts: a broken window or factory stereo is auto comprehensive. Off-premises covers only the loose personal items you carry, and often at a reduced percentage of your main limit.
